課程概述

This course introduces the formal and rigorous formalism as well as basic physical concepts and methods of classical mechanics to students. It aims to provide a precise and consistent description of the dynamics of single particles and systems of particles. In the first semester, the course presented a review of relevant mathematics, detailed discussions of advanced topics in Newtonian mechanics, introductions to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, and numerous examples (applications). The topics will be covered in the second semester include:
Planetary motion and orbital dynamics
Dynamics of a system of particles; Collisions
Motion in a non-inertial frame
Dynamics of rigid bodies
Coupled oscillations
Continuous systems; Waves
Special theory of relativity

課程目標
The goal of this course is to develop for students a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the motion of objects in the classical regime so that they can build up basic knowledge of and skills for solving problems in classical mechanics. In particular, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms introduced in this course are powerful methods to solve complicated mechanics problems such as planetary motion and rigid body rotation. There are also profound connections between the classical (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian) formalisms and quantum mechanics.
